the Scholars Programme
At Holmleigh Park High School, we offer a bespoke programme for our most able students that extends their skills and knowledge beyond the curriculum. Students who achieve highly in their assessments, and have ambitions to progress to top universities or higher-level apprenticeships are encouraged to apply for a place at the start of the academic year.
What does it involve?
Successful applicants to the ‘Scholars Programme’ will take part in specialist sessions throughout the year which involve lectures, group projects and individual research tasks. These cover a range of academic and vocational topic areas, including engineering and design, the environment and sustainability, arts and culture, and law and the justice system. Sessions are often tailored to the interests of the students within each Scholar's cohort. There are also opportunities for educational visits to places of academic and cultural significance. In the past, we have visited Bletchley Park, Cheltenham Literature Festival, The Senedd in Cardiff, Bristol Zoo Project and are considered regular visitors to The University of Oxford.
When does it take place?
- Year 8 ‘Pathway’ Students: Specialist sessions throughout the year (at least one per term)
- Year 9 Scholars Form: 1 x tutor time session per week
- Year 10 Scholars Form: 2 x tutor time sessions per week
For Year 8, sessions are arranged on an ad-hoc basis, and they will be informed via email or by their tutor. For Years 9 and 10, their timetable will show a ‘Scholars’ lesson every week if they are successful in their application.
Who is it for?
When students receive their ‘Rank Order Assessment' (R.O.A.) results at the end of the academic year, they will need to look closely at the information on their report sheet. Those students who are ranked in the top fifteen in their year group are guaranteed a place on the Scholars Programme for the following year*. The remaining fifteen places are available for anyone who will be placed in Set 1 or Set 2 in the academic year following their report. ALL students who wish to take up a place (guaranteed or not) need to complete a Google Form application which will be emailed out to eligible students from September.
*Places will be determined based on behaviour, attendance and attitude to learning alongside any applications. If, at any point during the year, we are concerned about this with a Scholar, they will be warned that they could lose their place on the programme. If there is no improvement, then they will be removed from the Scholars Programme and parents will be informed.
