HP Families Weekly Bulletin - Friday 24th April 2026
In this bulletin: an update on the Battlefields trip, our focus on fluent writing including how spelling punctuation and grammar are assessed across subjects, and an opportunity for students to take part in a youth led social media consultation event in Gloucester.
Dear HP families,
It has been a privilege to see our students represent HP on this week’s Battlefields trip. This remains one of the most powerful experiences we offer and students gained a great deal from it. Highlights included students sharing their own family histories from the First World War, taking part in the Menin Gate Remembrance Ceremony where they laid a wreath on behalf of HP, and asking thoughtful questions to our expert guides. We have also received praise from both our guides and members of the international public about the conduct, maturity and respect shown by our students throughout. I have since received emails commending the behaviour and engagement of all students. My thanks go to all staff involved, particularly Mr Dewfall, for the organisation required to make this experience possible.
It is crucial that all HP students can write fluently in order to communicate their thinking with clarity and precision. This week’s Fluent Writing update focuses on spelling, punctuation and grammar across academic and vocational subjects. At GCSE, students can be awarded up to 4 marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar in English Literature, which can make a significant difference to final grades. In subjects such as History and Religious Studies, extended responses require accurate written communication to access higher mark bands. In vocational subjects such as Health and Social Care and Sport, written coursework must be clear and accurate in order to meet assessment criteria. At Sixth Form, this is equally important. In subjects such as English, Geography and History, essay responses are judged on clarity and technical accuracy. Across both Key Stages, in vocational courses such as Business, Health and Social Care and Criminology, students produce extended reports and evaluations where precise written communication is essential. Fluent writing is fundamental to success across all pathways and is therefore a key priority for our school.
Under 16s Social Media Youth Consultation Event Gloucester City Council and The Venture Community Hub are hosting an event to explore how under 16s use social media and other digital spaces as part of a nationwide consultation. This is an opportunity for young people in Gloucester to contribute to conversations that are shaping national policy. The event will take place during half term on Friday 29th May at Patch in the city centre from 4pm to 6.30pm. Students can attend independently with appropriate parent or carer consent. Places can be booked using the following link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/under-16s-on-social-media-what-do-you-think-tickets-1987655721770
