Letter from the Head – Friday 9th May 2025
In this issue: This week we’ve seen our A Level and GCSE exam season begin, celebrated success in a national biology competition, cheered on our football teams in the GLT tournament, wished luck to our Ten Tors participants and continued to prioritise strong attendance for all.
Dear HP families,
This week marked the beginning of the summer exam season at HP. Our A Level Art and Photography students have been sitting their practical exams and we also had our GCSE Enterprise exam take place. From now on, the full exam timetable is in effect.
At HP, we do not offer study leave. Instead, we make the most of every possible teaching hour right up to each exam. This approach is designed to support our students in giving their very best performances with their teachers on hand right up to the last minute to offer guidance, reassurance and last-minute advice.
All staff are fully behind our exam students and we are proud of the calm, focused attitude they have shown so far. As the written papers begin in earnest next week, we wish them every success. Every exam matters and we will be with them every step of the way.
Away from the exam halls, the Ten Tors challenge takes place this weekend. A group of our students will be navigating the rugged terrain of Dartmoor, putting months of training and preparation to the test. It is one of the most demanding outdoor challenges available to young people in the UK and I want to wish all of our participants the very best of luck. We look forward to updating you next week on how they get on.
We also had a fantastic sporting event this week with the GLT Football tournament taking place on Wednesday. Our Year 7, 8 and 9 boys’ teams all represented HP with pride, showing great sportsmanship and determination throughout the day. Special congratulations to the Year 7 team who placed 3rd overall and to the Year 9 team who finished 4th—excellent results in a highly competitive tournament.
Academic success continues beyond the exam hall as well. This week, our Year 12 team in the University of Cambridge Biology Challenge achieved something truly outstanding. They won the trophy for ‘Best Researched’ entry, beating over 1800 students from across the country including many from selective grammar and independent schools. This is a huge testament to their hard work, curiosity and passion for science and we are incredibly proud of them.
Finally, a reminder that our number one priority this year is attendance. Our target is 95% or higher for every student and we are continuing to work hard to make this the norm across HP. Regular attendance is the most important factor in long-term success and a strong indicator of wellbeing. Please do check your child’s attendance regularly on MCAS and contact their Head of Year if you have any concerns.
I wish you all a lovely weekend,
Mr Hudson
