Holmleigh Park High School

Homework

Students spend only a small fraction of their time at school. Homework is therefore an essential part of ensuring our students have the best chance of success.

Years 7 & 8

Every day (Monday-Friday), students are expected to:

  • Complete a Low Stakes Quiz
  • Read for 20 minutes

Every week, students are expected to:

  • Complete four tasks on Hegarty Maths
  • Complete two daily challenges (25 questions) on Tassomai Science

Students are not expected to complete homework over the weekend - but may of course choose to structure their homework so that they complete some of their tasks in the weekend.

Low Stakes Quiz

Questions and answers are to be written into students planners and will match the subject below for that day e.g. Monday of Week A will be 10 questions on French. If a student doesn't study a subject listed below, they can choose which subject to complete on a particular day.

Week A Monday LSQ-French
Week A Tuesday LSQ-Geography
Week A Wednesday LSQ-History
Week A Thursday LSQ- PE
Week A Friday LSQ-Art
Week B Monday LSQ- French

Week B Friday LSQ-Personal study

Reading

Read at least 5 times a week and record the book title and page numbers read in your student planner.  Each child should be reading for a minimum of at least 20 minutes each time.  Although reading speeds and font size vary for each student and book, students should be targeting 10 pages per homework session - as a minimum. (2 minutes per page).  A parent or carer must then sign each entry to confirm the homework has been completed.

Hegarty Maths

Complete three regular tasks and one MemRi task over the course of a week, using Hegarty Maths.

Tassomai Science

Complete two daily tasks on Tassomai Science.

Students signing up for the first time should click here, and enter the code RR5DGWI7.

Years 9, 10, 11

  • Read for 20 minutes (9 and 10 only)
  • Complete subject specific homework

Every week, students are expected to:

  • Complete five tasks on Hegarty Maths
  • Complete three daily challenges (Years 9 and 10) or five daily challenges (Year 11) on Tassomai Science

Students are not expected to complete homework over the weekend - but may of course choose to structure their homework so that they complete some of their tasks in the weekend.

Low Stakes Quiz

Questions and answers are to be written into students planners. Students will be expected to choose the subjects they feel they would benefit most from self-quizzing on.

Reading (9 and 10 only)

Read at least 5 times a week and record the book title and page numbers read in your student planner.  Each child should be reading for a minimum of at least 20 minutes each time.  Although reading speeds and font size vary for each student and book, students should be targeting 10 pages per homework session - as a minimum. (2 minutes per page).  A parent or carer must then sign each entry to confirm the homework has been completed.

Hegarty Maths

Complete four regular tasks and one MemRi task over the course of a week, using Hegarty Maths.

Tassomai Science

Complete three daily challenges (Year 9/10), or five daily challenges (Year 11) on Tassomai Science.

Subject specific homework

In Years 9, 10 and 11 students will also be set “subject specific” homework.  For the majority of subjects this will be based upon the idea of deliberate practice – completing questions, exam papers or low stakes quizzes on the learnt subject content in class.  Subject specific homework should last approximately 30 minutes.

Sixth Form

Sixth Form are expected to complete around 15 hours of independent work per week in total. For most students, this would mean five hours per week for each subject. Our expectation is that at least five hours of work can be completed during independent study periods, so that students will typically have around two hours homework per night.

Students are not expected to complete homework over the weekend - but may of course choose to structure their homework so that they complete some of their tasks in the weekend.

Detentions

Failure to complete daily low-stakes quizzes will result in a detention on the same day.

Failure to complete Hegarty Maths, Tassomai, or subject-specific homework will result in a detention according to the rota below. Students will still be expected to complete the homework outside of this detention.

Week A Monday Maths (Hegarty)
Week A Tuesday French/ Geo/ History
Week A Wednesday English
Week A Thursday All other subjects
Week A Friday Science (Tassomai)
Week B Monday Maths (Hegarty)
Week B Tuesday French/ Geo/ History
