Homework

Students spend only a small fraction of their time at school. Homework is therefore an essential part of ensuring our students have the best chance of success.

Homework is a vital part of being successful at school, and makes a huge difference to your chances of success in Year 11 and Year 13. The table below summarises the homework we set for each year group.

08.06.23 Update : Changes to expectations for students completing Sparx homework

Following feedback from staff and students we are changing the expectations for all our students that complete Sparx homework.

Sparx automatically calibrates the difficulty of questions set for individual students by continuously reviewing previously completed homework tasks. This is done to create individualised tasks that students should be able to complete with a 100% success rate. We therefore set our expectations that students should be achieving a 100% success rate each week.

The new expectations will go live from Friday 9th of June 2023. Students will be made aware of these changes and posters will be on display around the Maths classrooms to reinforce this (see below).

Summary of new expectations for Sparx homework:

  • They must complete all tasks in the “compulsory completion” section. We will expect a 100% success rate.
  • For any incorrect answers, the accompanying video clip should be watched and the question attempted again before students move on to the next question.
  • The time allocated each week is dropping from 80 minutes to 60 minutes. Sparx will set tasks that it expects the student should be able to complete within that timeframe. If less than 100% of the questions are attempted we would expect a bare minimum of 60 minutes to be spent doing homework.
  • Work will still be set on a Friday and be due in the following Friday.
  • Failure to complete work to these standards/deadlines will result in a detention after school on the following Monday. Those students will also be given an extended deadline of “Tuesday 7am” to complete their remaining tasks to the required standard. Failure to meet this will mean they may have to attend a further after school detention on Tuesday.

Further Information

Self Quizzing

Students should test themselves by answering ten quiz questions per night, and checking that they can answer them correctly. These should be completed in the student planner.

The subjects are split over the timetables below (click on each year group for their timetable)

English (Bedrock)

English homework in Years 7-9 is set through Bedrock Learning. Students need to achieve 20 points each week by practising their vocabulary. You can access Bedrock here

Completion is checked every Monday morning.

Maths (Sparx/Hegarty)

Maths homework is set through Sparx (Years 7/8/9) and Hegarty (Years 10-11).

For Sparx, students need to complete the compulsory tasks. 08.06.23 Update : See new expectations above.

For Hegarty, students need to complete the four tasks set by their teachers, and the MemRi task. A task will be considered complete once a student reaches 70% or alternatively once a student has watched the the help video and attempts the questions twice.

Completion is checked every Friday morning.

Science (KayScience)

Work is Set on a Thursday and completion is due the following Wednesday by 8am.

Expectations of students is that they watch the video and complete the questions to the standard expected of the set they are in. Set 1 - 80%, Set 2 70%, Set 3 and below - 60%

Reading

We encourage reading whenever possible! Students should record their reading each night in their planner.

Help With Homework

We run a Homework Club every Monday to Thursday after school. We strongly encourage students to attend, especially if they are struggling with any of the online platform, as help is always available.

We also recommend families consider a homework schedule in order to break it down - what can seem like a lot becomes much more manageable if you take it in steps. The examples below are completely optional, but may be a useful starting point - or you might want to schedule things differently!
